About Dr. Michelle Block
Individual Counseling
Michelle Block is a licensed psychologist in Portland, Oregon. She specializes in women’s health, particularly pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to motherhood. Prior to her work in women’s health, Dr. Block specialized in anxiety, ADHD, faith/spirituality issues, life transitions, and relationship issues and she continues to enjoy working with these concerns in men and women. Dr. Block believes that the counseling relationship is centered on listening and understanding the client’s values and background, which guides the course of treatment. She uses an integrative approach influenced by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In her personal life she is raising three young children in partnership with her husband, while enjoying yoga, family walks and nutrition/cooking.
Education and Training
Dr. Block attended George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon for her doctoral training. In her training she worked in medical settings to support patients with their emotional and behavioral concerns during medical visits. She also worked with adolescents and adults in high schools and universities. Following doctoral school, psychologists complete a residency before receiving their license. Dr. Block’s residency was at Portland State University at the medical and counseling center (Student Health and Counseling SHAC). She spent two years at Portland State University gaining extensive training in anxiety, ADHD, diversity (particularly race, gender, sexual orientation, and disability), learning disabilities, and health and nutrition.
Once Dr. Block completed her training and was licensed she worked for a group practice in Tigard, OR seeing patients for counseling and ADHD testing. It was at this point she began studying women’s health.
Women’s Health
In her initial years of being a psychologist, Michelle became a mother. She sought out resources and research to support her own transition to motherhood and found the growing knowledge was benefiting her patients journeys in motherhood as well. Dr. Block sought further training in postpartum mental health to better support her patients in pregnancy and the postpartum period, including grief and loss.
